O, Obama! Why Dost Thou Vex Us So?

by: woody

Fri Dec 11, 2009 at 23:41:38 PM EST

(Well, heck, this is where the spirited debate lies, so up top it goes! - promoted by Diane G)

I have mined this vein before. This is the most current iteration on the theme of "O, Obama...": What the fuck did you expect, really?" I wrote it as a comment on Taibbi's blog, on a post attached to very good vid I couldn't figure our how to c&p. It is the best summary of my position and reasoning on the matter that I've done so far, I think. I'd be interested in your opinion:

I have to wonder how some people still seem stupefied by of the Obamanable Snowjob-man. It is not a simple matter, but neither is it impenetrable.

The situation was this: For the last 30 years, the Busheviki, and before them, Clinton, and the Raygunauts, had created such a mess with their predatory, exploitative, manipulations ad schemes that even white people were beginning to hate them. White people, as you know, still comprise about 70% of the USer population. This is a vital bloc, if you are trying to maintain the penumbra of legitimacy without, or prior to, resorting to the expedient of jackboots.

So, the word went around that the GOP was basically gonna throw the election. The senior partners in the Party of Property more or less conceded the contest to the junior members, who eagerly threw into the fray members of two "minority" groups which had long lobbied the body politic to elect one of their number President: People of Color and women.

Regardless of which "novelty" candidate the Dems chose, they were always about 5-to-3 favorites to win, because the country was thoroughly sick of the whole depraved ensemble that had played havoc with the economy and the Constitution, and had committed war across the globe for 30 years. The GOP chose McCain, who was as close as they had to being the Chimperor, only 20 years older, sicker, meaner, dumber, and thicker between the ears. The tip-off, of course, was Palin. Never had anyone so amazingly unqualified for the job EVER been selected by a major party for a slot on the national ticket. She was (and is) a blindingly unself-conscious grifter, a parvenu of the firsts water. Ignorant, parochial, ill-educated, unread, unmannered: her selection sent the clearest POSSIBLE signal of capitulation.

The GOP just wanted OUT. AWAY!

woody :: O, Obama! Why Dost Thou Vex Us So?

And that's what they got. In place of more and older and meaner Busheviki, they got the one person who was already pre-positioned to become a ready receptacle for and symbol of all the inchoate feelings of fear and insecurity and disappointment and foreboding and desperation that had been building through the long period of oligarchic re-indenturing, through "easy credit," of the (always already predominantly white) middle class. And they licked their chops, and stood back and just waited.

And who they got was/is a "fatherless" child, a striver who was compelled by his situation to find his identity in close to absolute conformity to the norms of CorpoRat Murka, a man driven by needs for approval, admiration, belonging. A man who, although I do not know if he's ever read it, must certainly live in the condition described by WEB DuBois as
"double consciousness," a person for whom virtually every move is a compromise. A living, breathing, paradigm case of it: someone who knows that, whomsoever they see in the mirror in the morning, when they leave the house, they are always already someone "other" in the eyes of the (powerful) majority of the people with whom they must interact and from whom he is visibly distinct.

Obama's seems to be an intelligent, a reflective guy. I get the sense he knows he has been offered as a scape-goat, someone to take the fall for all the abuses heaped on the people for the last 30 or 40 years by an increasingly dictatorial, Imperial Government. It seemed to me he almost as much as admitted it the other day at the jobs "summit."

A similar fate would have befallen HRC, too. Not, perhaps, at the same level of vitriol, because a white female gets preferential treatment from the mob far more easily than a black (even by half) male. As a polity, we are far more inclined to pile on any black than on any white person. Think Tiger Woods vs Mark Sanford or John Ensign.

So, from the perspective of the folks who Own the place, Obama was far the preferable candidate. I knew this when Rupert Murdoch endorsed Obama against McCain--his motives were, of course, purely economic: he knew Obama would be GREAT for his business, compared to McCain; and besides the fix was in by that time.

So here is my quandary: How is that folks with better than average sophistication and subtlety ever imagined that a person who found himself (in this case) raised to an almost unimaginable pinnacle of celebrity, and power, and (access to) wealth, who strove to make a 'good impression,' who then won the approval and attention for which he strove so mightily, from those whom he strove to please, and was so richly rewarded, would somehow turn and nip at--far less seize and savage--the hands which had curried, and cosseted and carried him to the absolute peak of acceptability and approval.

Now granted, they dropped him there, like a cur at a crossroad...

But he was  never gonna bite 'em.

Anyhoo, that's how I see it, how it feels and seems, and appears and interprets from here.

But...what if the owners chose the wrong dog? (3.25 / 4)

Now granted, they dropped him there, like a cur at a crossroad...
But he was never gonna bite 'em.

Hmmmm...

What if the dog is smarter than his masters?

Only time will tell.

Neither underestimate nor overestimate this man.

In a fight, the smaller, weaker fighter has only one tactic available that will give him the opportunity to win. He must wait. He must parry and defend until openings appear, and even when they do appear most of the time the best that he can do is to turn his opponent's power against him. Reflect and redirect the opponent's straight-ahead power into a circular force that turns back against him.

Black American culture has its Obama figures.

The greatest of them all?

Br'er Rabbit.

Yeah. I know. Joel Chandler Harris was white. But he just assembled the traditional trickster  stories from oral African and Native American roots. They predated his work by decades if not centuries. You could look it up.

We shall see.

Of course...Br'er Rabbit did get caught in a Tar Baby trap. Maybe right now Obama is stuck in one  too.

But maybe (like Br'er Rabbit), eventually Br'er Barack will once again trick Br'er Fox News, Br'er Bear Stearns and the rest of the corporate slave-owner brigade into throwing him into his home field briar patch and he will escape to fight another day.

We shall see.

The odds are with Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear.

But then...they odds always seem to be with the predators, don't they?

Do you not find it odd how many rabbits still remain in the world?

Maybe Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas had it right - the Creator does have a master plan.

We shall see.

Any way it works out...peace on the man. He's giving it his best try.

Bet on it.

If he's wrong...?

Then someone else will try.

Bet on that as well.

And the wheel will keep on rolling.

Ever forward.

Ever forward.

Bet on it.

I am.

Later...

Codswallop, Arthur. Unadulterated codswallop... (10.33 / 3)
"The Creator does have a master plan"

Which, according to your analysis--such as it is--puts the Obamanable Snow-job Man in the same class, because of his alleged multi-dimensional chess skills, the unseen plan?

Cosdwallop, Arthur.

I know he's giving his Masters his best efforts. He's corpoRat clean through--in case you missed it, I alluded to the fact frequently, and there's plenty of evidence (e.g., the Bankruptcy bill of 06). If he was gonna manifest any independence from the CiorpoRat agenda of which he is an integral part, he's had lots of chances, and he's never moved an inch off the CorpoRat plan...

Forget the "big" things, the three-pointers--war, economy, jobs, healthcare: he can't/won't even hit the free-throws for the 'little people' on the margins, the so-called 'wedge issues': DADT and DOMA are still on the books; he ignores EFCA; he appointed the banksters who are helping GS & the Fed rob us blind. Why are there still over 50 former Bushevik appointees in US Atty positions? Why is Don Siegelman still facing prison when Ted Stevens walks?

You, as a self-described African American, have a lot more invested in Obamanable than do those of us who aren't. And the tendency toward denial is gonna be almost irresistible. And the disappointment is gonna be all the more acute. But you KNOW he's not gonna throw over the traces and upset the applecart. He's gonna do as he's told.

"Bet on it."

He was set up. That much is obvious. Obvious, too, that he "gets" it; but still he won't take on the bullies.

[ Parent ]
When did I ever "self-describe" myself as an African-American? (0.00 / 0)
I have nothing whatsoever "invested" in Obama due to his racial makeup. In point of fact, I would have preferred Hillary Clinton, simply because I believe that she is a more confrontational personality than is Obama plus she has vast experience in the DC infighting game, experience that Obama is just now (painfully) acquiring.

Since I preferred Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama does that then "self-describe" me as a woman?

Your prejudices are showing, little k.

Zip it up.

Further...

But you KNOW he's not gonna throw over the traces and upset the applecart. He's gonna do as he's told.

No.

I do not know that.

In fact, he may end up owning the applecart. The jury is still out on that question. He has been president less than 1 year, and things they are 'achangin'. Changing faster than they have changed in any 1st year of any presidency in living memory. Gotta go back to FDR's 1st year to even come close.

Most of the leftiness shmoon anti-Obama mania is due to the fact that he has not cut the US military/intelligence police system off at the knees.

Besides the plain fact that if he tried to do so his sure and certain reward would be political and/or corporeal assassination before the next election, I've got news fer ya.

Much of the armed Islamic opposition to the US...no matter how just its originating political/economic case may have been...is residing way out there in crazy religious fanatic land. And much of the rest of it is just gangland, Islamic style. If you have ever tried to reason or compromise with a Christian fundamentalist nutjob or a street thug boss, imagine trying to do so with one who has a well-functioning guerrilla/military system behind him, one who has access to trillions of dollars of oil money and the strong possibility of controlling Pakistan's nuclear capabilities within the next several years if not sooner.

You think that this Afghanistan buildup is about Afghanistan!!!???

Wake the fuck up.

Go look at a map.

If what Obama is currently trying to do is not at least partly successful, you're gonna wake up someday real soon looking back on the good ol' 9/11 days with real nostalgia.

If you wake up at all.

Bet on that, bubba.

Bet on it.

Arthur, your prosodic/prosaic glissandos and artful strawmen (9.00 / 1)
notwithstanding, you haven't come close to answering my query: What evidence do you have, can you point to, that Obama will stand up to entrenched, wealth and power? Hell, he was selected by that very constituency for his very important mission: to SAVE the status quo.

[ Parent ]
You write: (3.00 / 1)

Hell, he was selected by that very constituency for his very important mission: to SAVE the status quo.

Where is my evidence? In the same place that the evidence for your statement above resides. In my my own personal perceptions of how things operate.

And further, even if that statement of yours was absolutely, unequivocally and unchallangeably correct...and I do not believe that it is very far off the mark, to tell you the truth...do you not see the possibility that Br'er Barack fooled Br'er Fox, Br'er Bear and the rest of the PermaGov predators?

Outfoxed them, so to speak?

I personally think that it is a damned good possibility, myself.

Why?

Because he's smarter than shit, that's why.

How do I know that?

Because of his use of the English language.

And why should you pay attention to me?

Because I'm smarter than shit, too.

Evidence?

...your prosodic/prosaic glissandos and artful strawmen notwithstanding, you haven't come close to answering my query...

Jes' like Br'er Barack and the predators.

Watch.

If he's lucky, they'll never know what hit them.

Watch.

Second term?

(If he gets there, of course. And if he does not and we end up with Sarah Palin or some other vicious duncefuck, a good part of the reason that he loses will be the leftiness shmoons' pie-in-the-sky, I-want-mine-with-ice-cream-on-top'-and-I-want-it-now!!! impatience. "Can I hear an Amen!!!???" [Thank you, Rev. Ike.])

Second term?

Fuggedaboudit.

FDR redux. With a good dollop of street experience to help him through the rough spots.

Watch.

Sorry, Art... (0.00 / 0)
I've learned and relearned the lessons about blind faith in Politicians.

Its ignorance and projection of things that don't exist onto a person who has their own agenda.

One does not play masterful chess by filling his cabinet with cut throat members of the very structure that needs reform.

One does not win a battle of wits without USING that excellent usage of the English language to at least TRY and sell the product he is trying to outwit the enemy upon.

I'm smart as hell too, my dear, and he is not the man behind the curtain waiting for the moment to bestow miracles.

If he ever had integrity, he tossed it for self-preservation the moment he realized he was in wayyyy over his head.

He is a practical politician, Diane. (0.00 / 0)
You supported him; you elected him. How on earth you or anyone else who was on the Obama bandwagon from the get-go...remember, I wanted HRC because I thought that she had a better fighting spirit...can now act shocked that he is not some combination of Mahatma Gandhi and/or Fidel Castro is totally beyond me.

The very first time he came to my consciousness was on the Randi Rhodes show, way before he announced his candidacy. He was a master of political hack-speak then...not necessarily a negative quality in one who wishes to get elected in America...and he is a master of political hack-speak now. (And hack-act as well) . Rhodes was sexistly gushing over his manliness...she's got female issues...and Obama was very competently saying absolutely nothing that could make him unelectable/unacceptable to the PermaGov.

He succeeded in that attempt, all the way to the White House.

Now he's got a complicated agenda, and the very first part of that agenda is maintaining a DemRat majority in Congress and getting re-elected in 2012.

Throw da bums outta Wall Street?

Tell McChrystal to go fuck himself and cut Karzai loose to be hung upside down in the streets of Kabul?

Not this upward striver.

Bet on it.

But...is he also some sort of consciouslessly evil Dr. No character?

I beg to differ.

He's a politician.

As leftiness a politician as has ever been elected president in this rightiness-dominated country.

So it goes.

And...as I said above:

Most of the leftiness shmoon anti-Obama mania is due to the fact that he has not cut the US military/intelligence police system off at the knees.

Besides the plain fact that if he tried to do so his sure and certain reward would be political and/or corporeal assassination before the next election, I've got news fer ya.

Much of the armed Islamic opposition to the US...no matter how just its originating political/economic case may have been...is residing way out there in crazy religious fanatic land. You think that this Afghanistan buildup is about Afghanistan!!!???

Wake the fuck up.

Go look at a map.

Remember my posts about my travels in Islamic North Africa?

(We ARE "At War". My observations after a week in the Middle East. was the most complete one.)

I am still there.

These people are not going to be "talked" down.

Not after have been subjected to 100+ years of successful economic imperialist oil hustle they're not.

Let alone the fundamentalist nutjobs who are running things in large parts of the Muslim world.

Should Obama simply withdraw all US troops from the region, here is what would likely happen.

1-Oil prices would skyrocket.

2-The fragile economy of the US would collapse. On the spot.

3-The right would scream "I TOL ya!!!" and the next thing you know, Ratpukelicans like Rush Limbaugh would be running this country.

Again.

You know...just like it was before Obama got himself elected by running a masterfully mid-line campaign.

Or do you not fucking remember the Butch years?

Imagine the Palin years!!!

UH oh...

So there we are. And there he is as well.

Caught between a hostile Islamic rock and a Ratpukelican hard place.

Scylla and Charybdising the ship of state through some nasty motherfucking waters.

Part of the turbulence of which is being caused by kneejerk lefittness shmoon asking him to act like Jesus H. Christ and complaining bitterly when he does not do so.

Lemme ask you...and Woody too...what would you do in his position? Provided of course that you had the smarts, the consistently brilliant political talent and the sheer good luck to have successfully navigated the many shoals and reefs of your own life and risen to a position of such weighty responsibility that the survival of quite possibly all of life on earth rested on your only too human shoulders?

Hell, Diane. You have trouble navigating through largely meaningless...powerless, at best... alliances with meta-pals like Maryscott and Gottlieb. I don't mean to put you down here...I'm no politician, myself...but really.

What would you do?

Write bin Laden a nasty letter?

Have a meta-showdown with Bear Stearns?

Tell the CIA that you're not gonna be its friend anymore?

Shit.

Sheeit!!!

This motherfucker's ass is in the sights of a million guns on a minute-by-minute basis. How he even gets to sleep at night is beyond my understanding.

And here you are, picking apart his tactical decisions.

Might he fail miserably?

Damned straight he might.

But as the wonderful jazz musician Rufus Reid...he started perhaps the best university program in the country for jazz education at William Paterson College in New Jersey...used to say when young players would diss established ones to him:

Tell you what. You go out and do it. After you have some substantial success, come back and we'll talk some more about this player's supposed shortcomings.

Do you think that you could do his job better?

I don't.

I know damned well that I couldn't. I'd 'a punched somebody out (verbally if not in the flesh)  before I even made it out of the Illinois political arena.

Not my gig.

But...it most definitely is his gig

Bet on that as well.

He was born to it.

And I hope to holy hell that he succeeds.

I really do.

My failed relationships = Obama's a God? REALLY AG??? (0.00 / 0)
I see.

Lets thank the GODS that high-strung artist types aren't actual Politicians, eh? Of course, one of those two has mental health issues, and it ain't Gottlieb.... so count my navigation failure as one, dig?

I won't honor the comment, I won't even defend the non-emotional business part of it.

But thanks for going for my personal throat and failings, to make an irrelevant point about Obama.

Did you think I would cringe and accede to your argument for having so done? Fuck no, baby, you picked the wrong negotiation tactic. I'm irrelevant.

Trust me, I went toe to toe with the Top Management at GM,, Chrysler and Ford, and had no cringe factor. Obama is not trying to bond with just as high strung artsy friends.

He is running a failing country further into the GROUND! He should be fighting to do what is GOOD for the People who elected them.

As to "supporting him from the beginning" I most ASSUREDLY did NOT!

I was an Edwards supporter. I wanted Denny, truth be told but knew his chances in Bubba-nation were nill.

I held my NOSE to vote for Obama.

See, you equate his position with his intent... and its utter projection that he means well.

I criticize his choices by FACTS, not projection, and he is doing things I am utterly against.

It is my RIGHT AND MY DUTY to criticize that. We slammed Bush over the Pat Act and are supposed to laud Obama's genius in continuing it?

Puhhhhhhh-leeeeeeeeeeez.

I'm not angry with you, just disappointed that you had to cave to personal attack when your argument didn't cut it.

Pathetic of you, really.

Listen to The Wild Wild Left on internet talk radio

That wasn't a "personal attack". Diane. (0.00 / 0)

Or if it was, it was a personal attack on myself as well.

I quite plainly wrote:

I don't mean to put you down here...I'm no politician, myself...

I wasn't "going for your throat", Diane...although your over the top reaction proves my point.

And my point was that you could not do his job.

There is no shame in that.

Me neither.

The only difference between us here is that I think he is doing his job as well as it can be done under the present circumstances.

Had HRC been elected she would have been faced with the same set of contradictions. I personally think that she would have navigated them more effectively than has Obama simply because she has more experience in the big-time DC arena than does he, plus she has a serious anger on about the personal harm our lovely ongoing vast right-wing conspiracy laid on her personal life.

But she lost.

So it goes.

Edwards?

He's a caver.

Good thing he got caught with his pats down before he got in a position of power.

He would have disappointed you way more than has Obama.

Bet on that as well.

And who else was in a position to win?

Nobody.

So that's what we have.

Barack Obama trying to get over as far as he can given the circumstances.

Ain't gonna change any time soon.

Sorry.

Deal wid it.

You named Gottlieb and Maryscott (11.00 / 1)
as my failures.

Caveating "I don't mean to insult you," followed by insult is a about as genuine as accepting a peace prize while escalating war.

Neither of us are politicians, not part of the equation you were making, rather a deflection.

Had you wanted to include yourself, you would have named your failed relationships.

Don't spin doctor out of it.

You said EXACTLY what you wanted to say.

I didn't fail at Maryscott, I worked to build her blog for no compensation, then she destroyed the place by handing it to the crazed zionazis. It blew my mind. It did piss me off.

How do you know what I could or could not do, given even a tenth of Obama's education? You never saw me negotiate the real business sector.

This blogging isn't that.

Its where my non-business persona rants and vents, and lets face it, emotion sells....

Its also why, Arthur Gilroy, you use an alias and I do not.

I stand behind the CONVICTION of my politics.

Loud.

Proud.

Thus far more effectively than you.

Politically?

I COULD do a better job. I know how to hire the best and brightest, how to promote them.

I know that every word people see online will either draw them or repel them from the movement.

I recognize the big picture problems.

I wouldn't bring my heart to the table as an Elected Official.

I'd do my fucking JOB, and follow the will of the 75% of the people who want universal health care and out of economically draining wars.

My name is Diane Gee and I'm a LIBERAL.

If I thought that my political views would not get in the way of my (barely middle class if that) financial life I would have no problem at all in identifying myself. Gotta eat and pay rent, though. On music sites I go by my real name and I am pretty damned outspoken on them as well. Pretty damned combative too. But not as outspoken there as I am here. (You know who I am. Google me if you doubt this. Or email me and I'll send you to some sites where I have made some big waves.)

Like I said...gotta eat.

So that goes as well.

You say:

I stand behind the CONVICTION of my politics.

Loud.

Proud.

Thus far more effectively than you.

How "effective" do you think that you and the rest of the kneejerk leftiness shmoon have been. Diane?

All I am hearing is complaint about how ineffective you have been.

Justified complaint, given the results of your efforts.

Maybe loud and proud ain't what works.

Just what feels good.

Maybe Obama would love to be "loud and proud" about what he really wants.

I personally think that he would, myself.

But he understands the game.

And...he has real talent at it.

He's a natural.

In his natural position.

As are you and I as well.

It's a perfect universe, D., and we all get exactly what we earn.

Wait, I'll make a concession (0.00 / 0)
I would make a far better Leo than Bartlett, Chief of staff than President.

I am the behind the scenes salesman who knows how to get shit done, and would rather let someone else have the spotlight and credit.

I work hard to sell what I sell.

Take twitter. When I tweet an Ad to one of my 158 followers (who I cull regularly because I don't want to read them) and someone like my friend LaBarceloneta retweets it to her 2,400 followers, and they all follow the little @ signs that show up now with Twitter's new stupid follow feature... every @ I name shows up in all my follower's follower's timelines. Picture my 158 times their 2400.

It gets big quick.

I know EXACTLY what I am doing Arthur.

Pushing envelopes.

Spreading the message.

Pimping my star like I could pimp a President.

I know what code words to use to pique interest.

I know what tags to use to bring people in.

Now picture me with access to the MSM, as the pimper.

I could have sold Universal Health Care as Chief of Staff in 140 characters or less, assuming the President got out and used his considerable oratory Powers to do so.

Instead we got Rahm and "Public Option"... words DOOMED to fucking fail, and Obama not even pushing THOSE very far.

Yeah.

You're right: I don't have the patience or charisma to be President.

But I sure could make a President Sell.

As long as he didn't go off the rez and make inside jokes, no one else would get but him, that could be taken as diametrically opposed to the message.

.... and so it goes...

Bet on It.

I wouldn't for a moment deny it.

I wouldn't in the least object to you're being issued a driver's license, for example. Your disability doesn't have anything to do with being able to navigate the hiways of Murka.

Didja ever read "The True Believer?" By Hoffer, the longshoreman/philosopher? Nothing anyone says will dissuade you, not even the evidence of your own eyes, because you'll find a way to spin it so it always looks like almost a victory, next time.

Here's the thing - "smart" and "Brilliance" don't always (10.33 / 3)
quite cut it, do they?

Perception, especially perception of improvement also enter the picture.

Obama stands in front of a newly tied Gordian Knot.  He tugs a teensy bit somewhere, and says "there!!!"

And the thing resembles a fully tied Gordian Knot.  And Obama says because he is so brilliant, "it will unravel in 19 years".

And then somebody wonders why a certain segment of his one-time followers don't seem quite so enamored of him anymore.

Which reminds me of a Monty Python skit of some years ago.  It was a confrontation between a wolf and an ant.  It was illustrated, and the narrator was explaining that the two adversaries were sizing each other up and ...

"...it's over!!.  The ant leaps, grabs the wolf by the throat, and in about 19 years will have chewed through the wolf's neck..."

Which reminds me tremendously of Obama.  And ordinary people.  See, those of us who do not play 11 dimensional chess need to be able to perceive that something good is happening.

We would like to perceive that wars are ending.  To the 11 dimensional Chess master, sending in 30,000 more troops may be well along the route to peace, but gosh darn, some of us have a difficult time perceiving that "peace is at hand" in such a situation.

And some of us who would like to see jobs created can't quite perceive the great brilliance of your boy devoting 10 times more to bank bailouts than to stimulus packages.

And how much effort would it have taken, really, to issue an Executive Order proclaiming that habeas corpus is the rule of the land?

And this thing with McChrystal was 180 degrees different than the Harry Truman/McArthur confrontation.  "I don't give a good god damn what you think of Harry Truman, but don't you keep your Commander in Chief waiting".

A Harry Truman like Obama would have fired McChrystal on the spot for blackmailing him into sending more troops.

Instead, Obama disgraces the Nobel Peace Prize as badly as Kissinger ever did.

Oh, and by the way, if Obama loses in 2012, and you blame us leftists who are sooooooooo impatient, - hey - haven't you heard - sources from the Administration have said in a message to bloggers that "shucks, it's only those 1-2% of the extreme left who care at all about the public option".

See?  We're only 1-2%.  Relax.  He won by more than that, didn't he?

Look for somebody else to blame when Obama goes down in flames in 2012.

And not us ultraleftists.

Maybe, you know - Obama?

Count on it.  Bet on it.

Yeah.

Lemme ask you a question, aristeides. (0.00 / 0)

Let us imagine that you do not read the opinion makers (left, right or center) and have in fact been in solitary confinement since...oh, say since the beginning of the end for BushCo. Since late August, 2005. Right after Katrina decimated New Orleans and BushCo completely bungled that emergency just as it had previously bungled the economy and the post-9/11 reaction. Or...since December 2007, the official start of the so-called "recession", with Obama, Clinton and Edwards contending for the Dem nomination and McCain pretty well having sewed up the Rat nod.

Let us say that it was a voluntary solitary confinement...a protracted retreat of some sort, be it in a monastery or in a cabin in the woods...and that you had not become mentally unhinged by the experience, that in point of  fact you were in the best of spirits today, able to take in the news with no residual anger, fear or any other set of negative emotions.

You step into the world and read/listen to/browse/otherwise partake of the state of affairs in the US since your self-imposed absence.

I'll give you three separate choices as to how you would view the state of the country, its government, its economy and its position in foreign affairs.

1-Worse.

2-The same.

3-Better.

What would your answer be?

(Hint...if you choose #1 or #2 you are either a liar or a fool.)

Step by step...not too fast, not too slow. Just right.

Step by step Obama is changing things.

He is succeeding.

Not too fast, not too slow.

Just right.

Watch.

Someone around here (11.00 / 2)
is a fool, all right.

The economy is in recession.  Unemployment is at a record post-Depression high.  Businesses are closed and shuttered.  Half the states are in near-bankruptcy. Foreclosures are at record levels.  People are walking away from their homes because they can't pay for them. Food pantries are begging for contributions.  Schools have no money to operate.  Students can't afford to pay for college, and their degrees are worthless when they get out, weighed down with debt they will never be able to repay.

The deficit has reached levels that can never be paid down, and Congress keeps spending more.  The banks are fat with taxpayer money but refusing to make any loans with it.  The government has shackled its citizens to the bloodsucking health insurance companies and drug companies.

Another war is underway while the occupation is still ongoing from the last one.  The US is building a vast steel wall in Egypt to make sure the Gazans can't escape starvation.  It is trying to strangle yet another nation just to do Israel's will.  The US is a laughingstock in every foreign capitol.  It tries to threaten Latin America, but Latin America is allying with US enemies.

Guantanamo is still open, the prisoners are still there.  The torture camps are still torturing.  The perpetrators are still free, holding government jobs and many of them still influencing policy.  No war criminals have been indicted. Neocons are infesting the government. Israel has conducted two more massacres and is now taking over the West Bank, while the US government wrings its hands and bleats impotently.  Congress has openly declared itself Israel's catamite.

Obamba takes the Nobel Peace Prize and taints it for all time with a peace defending war.  No person of any integrity will ever accept it again.

Any hermit who saw this fiasco would run like hell back to the cave and hope to find a gateway into a better universe.

Run baby, run

You see the glass as totally empty, apparently.

Broken, even.

I see it as 1/3rd full...and having improved over the past year...continuing on its upward course.

Feel free to run, aristeides.

I'm stickin', myself.

AG

P.S. "...hope to find a gateway into a better universe!!!???"

Therein lies the leftiness shmoons' single most glaring fault.

There is no "better universe". In point of fact...the universe is absolutely perfect in every way.

I really believe that. Right up to and through any and all negative experiences that come my way. It's all part of the warp and woof of this infinitely multidimensional fabric that we laughingly refer to as "our" world.

We don't own the universe; the universe owns us.

We are its servant.

And...on the incontrovertible evidence of the progression of life on this little planet, the universe is most definitely alive and equally definitely ever-growing.

Evolving.

Not in a straight line, of course. Back and forth and from side to side.

But always growing.

"The Life of Life" was the way a very wise man I once knew referred to this idea.

"The Life of Life".

Believe it.

Or not, as you must.

Despite the ongoing fears of so many lefties, righties and center-dwellers, it is quite apparent to me that Barack Obama is in service to a growing phase of this Life of Life. And knows it on some level.

You disagree?

That's OK.

You act as a brake on that growth.

E.M. Forster once said "If God could tell the story of the Universe, the Universe would become fictitious."

Hmmmmmmm....

And that wise man who I referenced above once said that if some concatenation of angels or aliens were to appear on this planet, tell the media and governments of this world that at such and such a time in such and such a place they were going to announce the Secret of Life; at the very moment that they verbalized it the universe would disappear because the story would then be over.

Love the story, aristeides.

The whole story.

From the Hitlers to the Mother Teresas and everything in between.

In the long run, that's all you've got.

There is a great old Celtic teaching story called.A Month of Sundays. Do you know it?

Short version...

An Irishman having troubles at home and everywhere else prays to God for surcease from his worries for just one month. Sunday is his favorite day, the day when he doesn't have to work and can lay back w/a little Irish Sunshine and contemplate the world in all its glory.

He goes to church one Sunday and asks in a prayer for a month where every day is Sunday...just one month...and the next day finds to his complete surprise that indeed his prayer has been answered.

It's Sunday all over again.

Well...he goes to church again, thanks God in His Heaven for this miracle, goes home and has a little more to drink...of course, the pub is closed, it being Sunday and all...and lazes around the living room w/his dear little wife and dear little children for the rest of the day.

Two perfect days in a row. What more could any man ask?

And the third day...another Sunday, God be praised...the sun is out and the fields are green, just as they were the day before, and although his bottle of Irish is getting a wee bit low, he is grateful for this respite from his troubles.

And so the fourth and the fifth and the sixth day...the garbage is beginning to pile up; his dear little family is getting progressively less dear; he is tiring of all the green and sunshine; church is becoming more a duty than a pleasure; he misses the boyos at the pub, misses his work down at the factory; his bottle of Jameson's is beginning to look more than a little sparse; there's not much more food left in the icebox and all the stores are closed...

Need I say any more? The point should be obvious by now. It is the exact same point made in the hundreds of stories about genies and magic lamps in the Arabic tradition. Somehow, perfect wishes (wished for by our limited, mortal  idea of "perfection") almost always seem to come around and bite the lucky man in the rump when he least expects it.

Wish away, podna.

Wish away.

Me?

I'll take the doers, myself.

Even if they're not perfect.

P.P.S. The great jazz cornet player Bobby Hackett was famous for never having a bad word for anyone. A bunch of musicians were once sitting around at a bar, hanging out and drinking and one of them said to Bobby  "Awww, man...I'll bet you wouldn't even have anything bad to say about Adolf Hitler!!!"

Bobby's response..."Well, he WAS the best in his field."

Like dat.

It's a stretch, right?

So is life.

Get used to it.

Or...

Run baby, run.

But I've got news fer ya.

Ain't no place to run.

Bet on it.

our negative emotions? (11.00 / 1)
Is it negative to recognize we are on (for the moment) the losing side of a class war, and not to believe in one particular man to be the vessel of changing that?

Wake up, dear one.

I said I have faith in the people, not the politicians.

Evolution often requires death and rebirth... and right now, the man in charge is keeping a dead end system on life support.

Listen to The Wild Wild Left on internet talk radio

[ Parent ]
I'll say it again. (2.00 / 2)

What would happen if this system were suddenly taken off of life support...and you know damned well where I stand about the ongoing rot that is destroying this country? It would precipitate a disaster on a scale never before seen on this planet. First of all, the entire world economy would collapse. Soon after that, there would an initial occurrence of the use of nuclear weapons by one set of fools or another, and that would be it.

Game over.

You say that you have "faith in the people".

Me too.

And as long as "the people" remain alive and in some sort of situation where they can function to some appreciable degree...you know, "the people" that you respect and love? Your family and friends, the guy down on the corner who runs a good, honest service business of some kind, the good teachers in your kid's school, the movers and thinkers who are actually trying to do something? (Among whom I include Barack Obama, by the way.) As long as those people across the entire nation (And they are everywhere, Diane. Everywhere.) can function, we still have a shot at redemption.

But...food riots? Fuel shortages? Gun law?

You don't want to see what would happen then, Diane.

Believe me when I tell you this.

And that is exactly what you are requesting when you say "Evolution often requires death and rebirth."

This "death" would make the Russian and Chinese resolutions look like kiddie games. Quite probably with no rebirth at the end of the line.

And...you use the word "often" in that sentence. Not "always". Often. Quite correctly. There are ways to evolve that do not require destruction.

Bet on it.

I guess a lot of it depends on what you mean by the word "evolution". Have you evolved past your forebears? I think that you have. I believe that we all have. I am more aware of how the world works in every way than were my parents and grandparents...not dummies, by any means...and my son is already way ahead of my game at the same age. Way ahead. Every generation of humans "evolves" on some levels. Many levels, and faster now than ever before in the history of mankind.

Did all of those thousands of generations have to kill their ancestors in order to evolve?

No. Of course not. They dealt with previous mistakes, did what they could..."muddled through" in the classic (survivalist like a motherfucker) British take on the matter...and kept on truckin'.

Patience, Diane.

Or...

I don't.

Choose well, D.

It's your mortal ass in the balance. Yours, mine, our children's...the works.

I think that Obama knows this.

I have my doubts, some days...he does have a disturbingly narcissistic streak, I fear...but like I said above, he is also smarter than shit. And if a narcissist wants to survive in order to be able to continue to adimre himself...well then,  he'd best try not to unleash the nuclear dogs of war if he can possiby do so.

Which (long-term) is precisely what Obama is trying to do.

So it goes.

He has to make compromises in order to do so?

That's the way it works.

Choose well, Diane.

We could do worse than Obama.

Much worse.

I am...and remain...a "self described" Irish-American, Diane. (0.00 / 0)

I am no more "African-American" than I am "Hispanic-American".

I received an award recently for my work in the early years of what has come to be called the "salsa" movement in the US. (Tito Puente: "Salsa"?  Salsa tomate!!! I play mambo music!!!" Yup.) I had to give a little speech, and in it I said that I have always felt like an honored guest in that scene.

I meant that from the bottom of my heart.

Honored to be such a guest. To have had the opportunity to see the world through eyes that have been forced to live on another of the many sides of the societal mirror than the one on which I was born.

That goes for the black culture as well.

But I am not African-American nor am I Hispanic, and I have never claimed to be. I can pass as a mainstream white guy in any level of this culture, from Appalachia right on through Little Italy, Great Neck, Hamtramck, Chevy Chase and Harvard if the need arises, and that allows me to pass through the permeable membrane/mirrors that separate all of us into "races" in this society.

I am as close to raceless as it is possible to get here. And my whole life has been informed by that position. It's nothing that I set out to do...it jes' grew. Like Topsy. I simply followed the music, and in doing so entered a much larger and richer world than I had ever dreamed existed.

Woody said:

You, as a self-described African American, have a lot more invested in Obamanable than do those of us who aren't.

Apparently he has not been paying much attention to my hundreds of posts in which I have repeatedly stated that I am a white man. He skimmed the shit, decided that since I favor the minority cultures of this country...and this world...to some great degree, why then I must be a person of color.

"Self-described" only stretches so far, Diane.

I have repeatedly "described" my sympathies for the worldview of those who are on the bottom of this system. Thus I must be black in Woody's world.

Hmmmmm....

Racist?

You betcha.

Racist like a motherfucker.

Bet on it.

No, he gets it (0.00 / 0)
you say you're a white man that has lived/worked/breathed the black community so long you are accepted as one of them. That you get them. You have even used the words... and no, I'm not going to google 3 years in the cesspool of myrightzion to find it.

Many times, Art.

I'm the least racist person in the world, and every time you said it, it made me cringe/laugh a little.

You and Lilian, both, come to think of it.

Listen to The Wild Wild Left on internet talk radio

[ Parent ]
Made you cringe? Laugh a little? (0.00 / 0)

Why?

First of all...I have never ever stated that I am accepted as one of "them". Whoever you think "them" might be. (Nice exclusionary choice of words though, O non-racist one.) I learned early on from a black roommate, colleague and friend where I stood and I accepted it.

As I said...I consider myself an honored guest in the minority cultures of America.

Nothing more and nothing less.

I simply followed the music.

It led me to Mozart, Bird and Africa/Cuba.

Equally.

You're the least racist person in the world, Diane?

Then why did you cringe/laugh?

Do you think I am like Lillian? Some white person trying to go native?

Please.

I'm just a working artist.

A working-class artist.

If the music that spoke to me was being played by Scots-Irish bluegrass players or Bulgarian singers, why...that's where I would have gone. But someone handed me an instrument when I was in 3rd grade that was used in ways that attracted me in Western European orchestral music, jazz and later in latin music, and that's where I went. Hell...when I first heard Bird and Diz and them, I didn't even know that they were black. I was 12 years old and LPs didn't have black people's faces on them then. All's I knew was that they were playing their asses off!!!

Word.

And I followed the music wherever it led me.

Rich or poor, black brown or beige, NY Philharmonic, Birdland or The Palladium

For better or for worse.

Bet on it.

AG

[ Parent ]
bullshit, those were your words (0.00 / 0)

What were "my words" of which you speak? (0.00 / 0)

I have been careful all of my adult life not to claim to be one of your "them". Like I said...the first time I thought that perhaps I was able to be "one of" some minority race in America (other than the Celts, of course) my black roommate and friend set me straight. Hard and clear. I was 18 years old. I never ever forgot it, either.

Listen to The Wild Wild Left on internet talk radio

[ Parent ]
Bullshit. (0.00 / 1)
Pure and simple.

As Diane well knows.

I have played extensively with everybody from Thad Jones and Charles Mingus (Two fierce "bruthas", motherfucker.) through Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Tito Puente and the entire cast of Fania singers and bandleaders with many stops along the way playing such pop acts as Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon and David Byrne. Just to name a few. My discography on AllMusic is well over 3 pages long, and they missed a bunch.

The only "wannabe" to which I will cop is this one. I have wanted to be a great musician since I was 12 years old, and I have gotten up every morning and worked towards that goal almost every day of my life.

Like I said...black, brown or beige. It don't mean shit to me.

What is it that you do again?

How many people of color smile and shout hello when you walk in the room?

Get a life.

You complain too fucking much.

AG

*hands Art a bronzed tortilla* (11.00 / 1)
Yeah, you sound pretty damn close to "raceless" alright. And you know, it's been my experience that the white people who go on and on the most about how un-racist they are--and how they can see life through the eyes of non-white people in America-- actually turn out to be just as colorblind as they are constantly reminding everyone they are!

The fact you can even make a statement like that...

I was going to elaborate with a sizable dash of vitriol, but I just decided that  this is a pissing contest that is not worthy of my urine.

Congratulations on your salsa award, hombre! See you at the next cock fight.

Obama is a war criminal and should be in leg irons in front of the International Court of Justice...not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize

[ Parent ]
I didn't bother to read the above war of words b/c it is a fact that Wood is correct (11.00 / 1)
I've said this repeatedly, but it has been verified and documented--by a highly trustworthy source-- that Obama was secretly vetted by the healthcare and Wall Street mafia before most of us ever heard his name.  Google "Paul Street" at znet. I mean hell, if he hadn't passed that acid test then he'd still be Obama the Illinois state representative and we'd haven't a fucking clue who he was.  Campaigning is quite expensive...I hear that the going rate for a reasonably well-funded campaign for political office these days is one soul.

The only thing I'd change in your article, Wood, is this sentence:

I get the sense he knows he has been offered as a scape-goat, someone to take the fall for all the abuses heaped on the people for the last 30 or 40 years by an increasingly dictatorial, Imperial Government

I would add that not only does he know that this is his role, but that he eagerly signed up to play that role from the beginning.  Somewhere in a sumptuous and well-appointed room far from the public eye, Cuban cigars were smoked, hands were shook, and a strategic plan  was devised (i.e., an Obama) by the same people who in public pretend to divide themselves up into Repubs and Dems--but behind the scenes they could let their hair down, take off their masks, and just be themselves: Goldman Sachs, BlueCross, Lehman Brothers, BearSterns, JP Morgan et al.

Great essay Wood

Obama is a war criminal and should be in leg irons in front of the International Court of Justice...not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize

Obama, and the cynicism of pragmatism (11.00 / 1)
Frankly, I don't see whatever virtue is in the Obamic pragmatism and cuddly make-nice ass-kissing of the bankers, stock swindlers, extortionists, and other sorry excuses of the right-wing owning class. And I personally find it offensive that someone has the balls to work his manufactured image as a downtrodden person of color to pull off one of the biggest and most brazen scams in the history of the country.

I would prefer to vote for an intelligent, empathetic, and honorable person of principle and personal integrity, who was rational and cognizant enough to be able to see and correct their mistakes without their ego getting in the way.(Or their need for 'acceptance')
Morality and ethics are not an issue that should be determined by 'popularity', as the morally and ethically correct choice will not always be popular. But isn't one of the roles of the President to raise the level of people's perceptions so they see the value in doing the "right" thing? And the shame in losing an opportunity to redress old injustices?

Pragmatism-driven apologetics of the last 50 years are responsible for the mess we are in now; as a country, and as a planet.
The New Feudalism that is upon us is the consequence of not demanding better from our politicians and religious personalities
(I am averse to calling them 'leaders',except in terms of a 'Judas Goat', perhaps.)

If the O-man, Hillary, John Richards, and their ilk are the only alternatives to geriatric nut-jobs like McCain, and his pet pit bull, the Palinator -we are just marking time circling the drain, because we are well and truly fucked.
